  5.     Already afflicted by economic ills and a festering guerrilla
  6. insurgency, Peru is now plagued by an epidemic of cholera
  7. sweeping along its Pacific coast. As of last week, the disease
  8. had claimed 90 lives and infected at least 14,000 people. It
  9. is the first major outbreak of cholera in the western
  10. hemisphere since early in this century.

  12.     Local authorities have moved quickly to stem the epidemic,
  13. which is spread by poor hygiene and contaminated water, raw
  14. food and fish. Street-side food vending in Lima has been
  15. banned, and a national media campaign is under way to encourage
  16. sanitary habits. In an effort to prevent the disease from
  17. spreading to their neighboring countries, health officials in
  18. Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile have prohibited the importation of
  19. uncooked Peruvian food products. Soccer matches in Lima between
  20. Peruvian teams and squads from Argentina and Uruguay have also
  21. been canceled. While the exact source of the outbreak remains
  22. unclear, tests of coastal waters have shown a high degree of
  23. contamination. Some reports speculate that the cholera arrived
  24. on a ship from Southeast Asia.
